The vulnerable man can be seen being repeatedly punched by a much larger man as he lies on the ground.
The attack took place in broad daylight and despite a number of people witnessing the attack as they walked by, nobody went to help the victim.
It is believed the incident happened after the homeless man was alleged to have kicked seagulls outside KFC in Newcastle's Bigg Market.
This led to a row between the victim and two other men, the Sunday Sun reported.
The attack was captured on camera phone by a 26-year-old passer said she was left 'scared stiff' by what she witnessed.
The woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was so frightened. I just thought what the hell? It was crazy.
"People had been passing by and were just pointing as if to say 'look at that', but there was no help at all.
